ABOUT THE POEM: This poem reflects the emotional distortion that follows separation. It recalls a time when two people were pulled apart, only to encounter each other again in dreams, the way old acquaintances sometimes reconnect unexpectedly online. The Facebook image symbolizes a reunion that is more archival than alive, like pressed flowers kept long after their fragrance is gone. The speaker admits to a changed inner landscape: women appear distant through a backward telescope, while reality itself becomes unbearably sharp under an electron microscope. The poem captures how heartbreak alters perception, enlarging pain and diminishing everything else.

Do you remember those days
we were torn apart-
who could have guessed
we’d meet again in dreams,
the way estranged friends
run into each other,
like pressed, withered flowers,
on Facebook one random night.

Don’t judge me,
but now,
when I look at women
I hold the telescope backwards;
when I look at reality
I reach for the electron microscope.
