ABOUT THE POEM: Chapter 35 builds on the foundation of character as the ultimate internal possession established in previous chapters. The chapter opens with the traditional, often lauded metaphor of the candle: "Someone else lights it. / It burns itself the entire time, / giving brightness to someone else." This image of selfless, burning sacrifice is immediately contrasted and reframed by the direct command: "Be your own light, / and don't blink." This is a rejection of passive, externally motivated altruism (being lit by someone else) in favor of radical self-illumination and unwavering internal resilience (don't blink). The poem then elevates the candle into a profound philosophical entity: "The candle itself is the seeker, the knowledge, the path, the destination." This is a rejection of external spiritual or philosophical frameworks (like the traditional Hindu concepts of Marga or Gyan). Everything required for enlightenment and purpose is contained within the self. Yet, this internal totality is rendered moot "if it knows nothing at all," emphasizing that self-possession must be paired with conscious knowledge and awareness. The core lesson from the "candle in the wind" is a powerful affirmation of the necessity of struggle: "there is no character without strength, / no meaningful life without struggle." This links character not just to integrity, but to active effort and resilience. The introduction of the hypothetical robot is a critical pivot. By tasking this perfect robot with replicating the complexities of a genuinely meaningful human life—not just actions, but striving for self-improvement, examining its own life for meaning, chasing love, maintaining romance, and finding time for self-development—Ronie Dinosaur sets the bar impossibly high. This thought experiment reveals two things: The immense, multifaceted effort required for true human flourishing, making the simple self-sacrifice of the candle ("burning to give light to others") seem "easier." It re-centers the focus on the internal, conscious striving that a mere machine cannot replicate. A machine can perform actions, but can it truly strive for love or examine its life for meaning? The concluding stanza is a declaration of ultimate defiance and self-control. The statement, "Now the universe will not be able to do it again," represents a final seizing of control from fate or circumstance. The core of his power lies in the union of "Desire and intent are both in my hands." This is the moment where Ronie Dinosaur fully owns his own causality. Even if he faces defeat ("Even if I lose now"), his character—his inner, unbreakable will—will not let the loss define him or happen to his spirit. He affirms the necessity of integrating action with principle: "Walk / while you talk the talk," embodying his philosophy as "Ronie Dinosaur." This chapter is a testament to the belief that the true battle is always internal, fought and won by the sheer force of unbroken character.

Ronie Dinosaur Chapter 35 – Candle in the wind

Someone else lights it.
It burns itself the entire time,
giving brightness to someone else.

Be your own light,
and don’t blink.

The candle itself is the seeker,
the knowledge,
the path,
the destination-
and yet none of them
if it knows nothing at all.

The candle in the wind teaches this:
there is no character without strength,
no meaningful life without struggle.

Make a robot that can replicate
not just human actions,
but while performing them
is also striving to become a better athlete,
examining its own life for meaning
and purpose in the next blink.

Let it chase aspirations
while searching for love in a life partner,
sending and receiving children from school,
maintaining romance at night,
and still carving out time
for self-development.

Well, I guess
burning to give light to others
seems easier now.
But that is not the point either.

Walk
while you talk the talk-
the way I do,
like Ronie Dinosaur.

Now the universe will not be able to do it again.
Desire and intent are both in my hands.
I will not allow it.
Even if I lose now,
my character will not let it happen.
